Locks and Dams

Sometimes in order to navigate a river, a lock is required to go around an obstruction—such as a rapid, dam or mill weir—to avoid complications with the change in the level of the river across it.

In large-scale projects, both weirs and locks are used. A weir increases the depth of a shallow stretch, and the required lock is either built in a gap in the weir, or at the downstream end of an artificial cut that bypasses the weir and perhaps a shallow stretch of river below it as well. A river that uses these means to improve conditions is often referred to as a waterway or river navigation.

Synthetex supplies specially engineered fabric forms for the underwater construction of scour aprons for locks and dams. Our engineers and manufacturing personnel can be relied upon to develop design schemes and products to meet your most challenging underwater requirements.
