In some areas, a pipeline may cross water expanses including rivers, seas, straits, canals and streams. In other areas, they lie entirely on the seabed. These pipelines are known as offshore pipelines. Their primary use is to carry oil or gas, but transportation of water is also important in offshore projects, and there’s a distinction between a "flowline" and a pipeline. A flowline is an intrafield pipeline that it is used to connect subsea wellheads, manifolds and platforms within a particular development field. A pipeline, or "export pipeline," brings the resource to shore. The construction and maintenance of marine pipelines bring about logistical challenges different from those on land, mainly because of wave and current dynamics, along with other geohazards.
When dealing with submarine pipeline construction, the main consideration is the condition of the seabed. It could be smooth and flat or uneven and corrugated with high and low points. If it is uneven, the pipeline will have free spans when it connects two high points, and the section in between will be unsupported. If that unsupported section is too long, the bending stress from the weight of it may be too excessive for it. In addition, vibration from current-induced vortexes could become an issue. Corrective measures for unsupported pipeline spans include seabed leveling and post-installation support, including HYDROTEX® pipeline supports.
