Water and Wastewater

The most popular water and wastewater treatment across the globe is also one of the simplest and least expensive. Lagoon systems use natural and energy-efficient processes to provide low-cost water and wastewater treatment. They are one of the most cost-effective water and wastewater treatment options available.

There are several different types of system designs for lagoons, including ponds, reservoirs and basins. Lagoon systems include one or more ponds or basins designed to receive, hold and treat wastewater for a predetermined length of time. Reservoirs are often lined with geomembrane liner⎯which is designed to prevent leaks to the groundwater below⎯as well as a fabric formed concrete mattress to prevent damage to the liner, thwart animals from burrowing and stop erosion of banks and dikes. While in the lagoon, water and wastewater receives treatment through chemical, physical and biological processes. Every lagoon system must be individually designed to fit its specific site and use.

The type of soil, amount of land area available, climate and level of sunlight and wind all determine which design will be used. Other important factors include the amount and type of water or wastewater to be treated as well as the level of treatment required by state and local regulations.

Synthetex’s HYDROTEX® Fabric Formed Concrete mattresses prevent erosion of the lagoon's banks from wind generated waves and the growth of long grass and weeds that block wind and provide breeding areas for flies, mosquitoes, and other insects. Weeds also can trap trash, grease and scum, which cause odors and attract insects. Weeds are used as food by burrowing animals, who can cause damage to banks and dikes. In addition, dead weeds may contribute to increased BOD levels.
